A lot has happened since my last update on the OCTA OC Bridges construction project at Tustin/Rose. In my last post, the section over the train tracks hadn’t been put into place yet. I was wondering how they were going to add that section, and in October I found out!
They brought in a big crane (appropriately labelled Mr. Crane on its side) and lifted large spans of pre-made concrete sections into place.
Each section had to be brought in on their own truck as they were pretty large.
Since they were lifting the sections and dropping them into place, train traffic didn’t need to be halted that I could tell. And it didn’t take very long to get all of the sections in place – I think maybe two or three days.
Then as I had hoped, the wooden framework set up under the bridge was being dismantled! It was interesting watching pieces of lumber falling to the ground from the underside of the bridge. It also left a big mess in the street.
As most of the falsework was removed, I finally started getting a view back.
Then the entire street was ripped out and re-paved, starting in the middle of the street.
This is actually still ongoing and I hope it gets done soon. The intersection from Orangethorpe to the Tustin/Rose connector street Del Cerro is all messed up. It seems like there is still a lot of work yet for the construction crews to do, but I’m happy that they opened the bridge. I don’t have to wait for long intermodal trains to pass and I can watch them go by without seeing them blocked by a wooden framework.
